Tejo Portugal D8 Visa: Remote Work in Europe's Most Welcoming Destination

Imagine stepping away from the noise of traditional work environments into a place designed for genuine living. The Tejo Portugal D8 Visa is built for remote workers and digital nomads seeking more than just a place to work—it's a pathway to a slower, more intentional lifestyle within the European Schengen Area.

Unlike temporary travel or tourist visas, the D8 is a proper residency visa that lets you legally live, work, and build roots in Portugal while maintaining your remote income. Whether you're freelancing for international clients, working for a foreign employer, or running a location-independent business, the D8 provides full residency rights for up to five years with the option to renew.

Why Portugal's D8 Visa Appeals to Nomads

Stability meets flexibility. The D8 visa gives you what most digital nomads crave: the freedom to work from anywhere combined with the security of legal residency. You can establish a physical address, open a local bank account, and become part of a community rather than hopping between short-term rentals.

Accessible income requirements. To qualify, you need to demonstrate a steady remote income of at least €3,480 monthly (approximately four times Portugal's minimum wage). This is earned through remote employment contracts, freelance agreements, or independent professional work—all sourced from outside Portugal.

Schengen freedom. Once established as a D8 resident, you can travel visa-free throughout the 29-country Schengen Area, taking up to 90 days in any 180-day period for exploration or client meetings.

Residency perks without the golden investment. Unlike Portugal's investor residency programs, the D8 requires no property purchases, no capital investments, and no complex financial arrangements—just proof of remote work and income.

Life Beyond the Visa: Building in Portugal

Most D8 visa holders find themselves staying longer than planned. The combination of Portugal's welcoming culture, affordable cost of living, reliable infrastructure, and vibrant international community creates space for genuine work and life balance. After five years of continuous residency, you can apply for permanent residency—and eventually, Portuguese citizenship.

The D8 isn't just about escaping to work remotely from a new location. It's about transitioning into a new chapter where you're no longer just passing through.

Tejo have been the most helpful resource to our family as they deeply understand all of the nuances of the program and how everything in Portugal works. Their ability to clearly communicate what is needed by when - and condense everything from legal, the government, and the bank has been the best. It would have been a lot harder for us to get through this without them.

I chose Tejo because I felt like the team really understood what I was looking for, and cared about the success of my application.

As a self employed business owner in the US, I was concerned that my visa application and tax situation would be complicated. Tejo helped me retain my permanent business address and work out a plan so that my significant other and I could work and travel in Europe. 10/10!

FAQ

Common Portugal
residency questions

Which visas can Tejo help me with?

Tejo supports clients exploring three main residency routes: the D7 Passive Income Visa, the D8 Digital Nomad Visa, and the D9 (Golden Visa) investment residence permit, alongside other options like D2 where appropriate.

What’s the difference between D7, D8 and D9?

D7 – Passive Income / Retirement Visa
For retirees and people with stable passive income (pensions, rentals, dividends). No big investment required, but you’re expected to actually live in Portugal most of the year.

D8 – Digital Nomad Visa
For remote workers and freelancers earning from outside Portugal, typically at 4× the Portuguese minimum wage or more.

D9 – Golden Visa (Investment Residence Permit)
For investors who qualify through a €500,000+ investment, such as regulated funds, with very light physical-presence requirements (often around 7 days a year).

Who is the D7 Passive Income visa for?

The D7 is ideal for retirees, early retirees, and people living on passive income rather than a local job. That includes classic retirees, ex-public-sector workers with pensions, and individuals living off rentals, dividends or business exit proceeds.

Who is the D8 Digital Nomad visa for?

The D8 is aimed at remote workers and freelancers who can prove a stable income from clients or employers outside Portugal and meet the income threshold (usually around 4× the national minimum wage). It’s a fit if you want to keep your current work but change your life backdrop to Portugal.

Who is the D9 Golden Visa For?

The D9, commonly called the Golden Visa, grants residency in exchange for a qualifying investment—today that typically means €500,000 in eligible funds or other non-real-estate routes.

Tejo Ventures manages a Golden Visa–eligible clean-energy investment fund and offers a 360-degree service that supports investors from initial inquiry through residency, including documentation guidance and coordination with legal advisors.

Do these visas lead to Portuguese citizenship?

Yes, D7, D8 and D9 all lead to the same endpoint: after five years of legal residency, you can normally apply for Portuguese nationality, subject to language (A2 level) and clean-record requirements.

Recent changes mean that, for many applicants, the 5-year clock now starts from when you first apply for a residence permit, not from when the card is issued, which can effectively shorten your wait.

Tejo can connect you with legal partners who specialize in the citizenship step when you’re ready.
